I have 9 years experience in teaching English in Vietnam for levels kindergarten to University (IELTS). I can teach face to face as well as remote online, and have substantial experience in both.
My teaching style is summative, in other words I don't just repeat content and expect students to memorize. My method is to let them learn themselves through research and their knowledge base, and then submit knowledge in a format that they are comfortable with and skilled in. I then do mini-assessments as well as regular summative assessments, tracking the progress in small steps and then larger course-end assessments,
I believe that education is not a job - it is a lifestyle. Passionate teachers teach not because they need a job, but because they are passionate about giving children knowledge. That is why, sometimes when teachers don't have the necessary equipment, resources or circumstances to teach with, they still walk into the classroom and do their best. It is part of a breed of people that will never give up living a purposeful life.
I believe that people in education should always know that they are just a cog in the wheel - students, parents and teaching will always be more important than themselves. Keeping children safe, applying and sharing knowledge and ensuring we apply the best education principles daily. We should play our role in nurturing the fabric of society by imparting knowledge, values, and critical thinking skills - not only book knowledge.
The 21st Century teacher is not one who stands in front of the class and beats the knowledge down on his students, expecting them to remember it. The 21st century teacher is the one that critically challenges the students, give them the pathway and let them collect the knowledge themselves. This way they develop critical thinking skills, research abilities and the freedom of choice within a controlled education environment. Lastly, we need to move away from formative assessing styles to summative styles, allowing students to co-operate, co-exist and have the freedom of expression within the controlled environment.
